13 feared dead in Mwingi accident

Over 13 people are feared dead,33 others seriously injured in road accident along the Mwingi -Garissa road 15 kilometers from Mwingi town.

The bus is said to have lost control and rolled several times as it attempted to overtake a salon car at round 9 am Monday morning.

Several people are still trapped in the mangled bus and police are making frantic efforts to rescue them.

The dead include 5 males, 5 females and 3 children. Of the 33 Injured, 30 were treated and discharged while three others are admitted.

Police say eight people killed on the spot.

The ill fated bus was heading to Mandera via Garissa and had left Nairobi with a capacity of 62 passengers.

On Saturday, 11 people perished in a road accident involving a bus and a lorry at Man Eaters lodge a few kilometres from Manyani Government Prison along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

The bus was travelling to Nairobi while the lorry was heading the opposite direction when they collided.

 

The accident comes barely a fortnight after Prime Minister Raila Odinga put traffic police officers on notice for sleeping on the job resulting in increased incidents of road accidents that have left several people dead in the recent past.

He said police officers were not keen to implement traffic regulations and were instead using road blocks to extort money from motorists.

Last month 23 people died in Ukambani while going back home from a dowry ceremony.

Meanwhile, Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has sent a message of condolences to the bereaved families.

Mr. Kalonzo visited the site of the incident and later consoled the injured who are currently undergoing treatment at the Mwingi District hospital where he wished them quick recovery.

The VP regretted the incident, noting that it comes in the wake of a spate of other tragedies that have hit the nation in the recent past terming them as national disasters.

Mr. Musyoka who is the Mwingi North Member of Parliament was accompanied by Assistant Minister, Mr. David Musila, who is also the Mwingi South legislator, and his Kitu South counterpart, Mr. Isaac Muoki.

The Bus christened PALSAN was said to have been heading to Garissa from Nairobi when it experience a tire burst about 15 km from Mwingi town causing the driver to lose control and landed in a ditch.

According to the Hospital Medical Superintendent, Dr. Nasio Abina, the reported death toll has reached 13 people and 14 are undergoing treatment while other four have so far been attended and discharged.

The Vice President thanked the hospital administration, the area security team and wananchi in general for their rescue efforts that saw the accident victims attended to promptly.

Mr. Musyoka attributed road carnage in the country to human era and particularly appealed to drivers and other road users to exercise caution to avoid loss of lives.

” The rule of law must be adhered to, let us be  discipline, this tragedies must stop, we can be able to avoid them if we follow the law,” said VP.

The Vice President asked Kenyans of all faith to pray for the nation for divine intervention from God so as to evade such calamities.

Mr. Musila and Mr. Muoki also extended their condolences to the bereaved families and quick recovery to the hospitalized.

The two leaders appealed to drivers to observed traffic regulations and take great care while driving.

Mr. Musila said the death toll from the recent past can only happen in a state of war, regretting that some of the causes of tragedies were avoidable.

“This kind of deaths may only happen in a state of war, I call on drivers to take extra caution, let us pray for this nation so that God will forgive our trespasses,” Musila added.
